Playoff Fishing here on the Missouri River

Playoff Fishing here on the Missouri River

It is go time here. Playoff fishing here on the Missouri River. Excitement daily as we are headlong into the fall fishing period.

And it is good!

I sighted many real life BWO flies not he water yesterday. The first showing in any numbers that I have seen. And we can expect more to come. Some years we only see the damn tiny baby baetis for a spell but the true BWO’s have shown themselves.

We had seen them not he lower river last week while fishing with the last Adv FF School and this week with the first October session we saw in them in bug numbers on the upper river.

It’s go time!

Excitement in the air as the baseball season is into the latter stages of fun. Playoff baseball season means great fishing season here and everywhere in Montana.

Fish all day long and watch the pros toss the ball around the field.

Daily BWO hatches can happen at 145pm. I would be in my favorite dry fly flat at that time. Or shortly thereafter. I certainly plan my day around the hatch.

Good things to do before the hatch include nymphing and streamer fishing. The nymph bite has been off the charts good. Not every moment of every day but overall very consistent.

Scuds, sows, pheasant tails, Little Green Machines, S & M’s, Little Green Mo, Radiation BWO’s…the normal fare for this time of year. And remember the bite is good all throughout the Missouri River corridor. Up and down from the dam to Cascade it is all good.

Those searching for the fish on top can start in the morning fishing to the small black and grey Diptera fly that will be covering the boat, your waders, and such. They are eating them on top. Not a common top side meal but fish are funny creatures. Look closely at the rise forms to understand exactly where the trout are nibbling.

As the afternoon arrives you best be on your way to the dry fly Valhalla of your choice. As mentioned above the bigger BWO’s have arrived and we hope to see them more often this month.

A good October will have 4 or 5 perfect days of fishing. Cool, calm, overcast, moist, and quiet. With a side of BWO BUGS! We have had 3 already. So this month we may exceed our quota. Let’s hope so! I am doing the bug dance right now. You should too.

Swingers have been seen swinging. Profound huh. The weeds have left the building, for the most part. Good swinging conditions including the option to swing BWO emerges int he afternoon. Oh boy! Fun stuff. More tips, lines, rods, accessories coming in the Headhunters front door from OPST, SA, RIO, Anderson Custom Rods, Sage, ECHO and more. We are Montana’s Trout Spey HQ.

Good times all the way around this month. Guide trips out daily with lodging, demo rods, sale items, cold weather clothing, sportswear and outerwear here in the shop.
