Hump Day Winter Fly Fishing Forecast

Hump Day Winter Forecast

A winter weather pattern has descended upon us here in central Montana.

Finally. Snow a couple ties this past week spitting a couple inches each storm. Today spitting more snow with air temps crawling out of the single digits for a nice afternoon in the 30’s. Most of the next week includes temps in the 30’s and low 40′ for daytime highs. The snowpack in the greater scheme of things is increasing. It really does not matter what is happening here locally with the snow. We are more concerned with the southern portion of the state. That is where our summer water comes from.

But, snow here does put us in a better mood. We like water.

Long talks yesterday amongst the staff here at HH HQ and we believe that the summer water forecast will be bout average. Speculation? Yes.  We know it is too soon to predict anything.  So that is why we predict average water and more dry flies.

April, May, and June could be sick!

Mild in our neighborhood. The phone is ringing at the shop with spring and summer bookings. …A couple boat ramps in jeopardy for slippery sliding today. Check them out first before during you dump your boat in the water. WC, Spite, Stickney in question. Shelf Ice does exist and is dangerous.

Some good dry fly action out there. Midges? Maybe e. Small stuff that brings fish to the surface? Certainly. Patterns? Normal winter with Adams, cluster midges, single midges, small black soft hackles. Nymphers in normal winter fare as well with pink flies ands sow bugs. Swingers? You bet. Small and flashy, or small and black is the latest news.
