Mid December Missouri River Fishing Report
Just saw the water dip below the federally mandated, suggested, lows of 2800cfs. Now back to 2920cfs. Frightfully low below the 2800 mark. Let’s keep the water up, message to water managers. A good time to look and find and discover and understand the subsurface structures that the Missouri River has to offer. Mark the structures in your head and capitalize at a later date!
Uncommonly warm air temperatures are still filling our days. This weekend we will witness temps in the high 40’s! Wow! No snow on the horizon in the extended forecast. Will January bring some preciptitiaton? I know that I am asking Santa for snow this Christmas! And beyond.
Sows and scuds and Zebra’s and worms and pink flies are status quo as we move through the early winter period. Deep and slow and hit it when it pauses, moves, stops or otherwise. Keeping tension on the line is key to the sometimes soft and occasionally indiscernible takes. Summer style n ymphing includes lots of slack in the equation. Not the same in the winter nymphing sessions. We love a soft downstream mend as to be almost tight on the flies when the trout makes a bad decision. Ask in shop of any questions you have about techniques for winter success.
Guide Trips available all winter long. Ae you a local Montanan that want to get a leg up this winter? Look us up for local lodging and guide trips this winter. Certainly if the weather continues like it has!
Swingers are glued to the Skagit lines as the water temps have dipped below the 40F mark. Scientific Anglers TC Tips and RIO IMOW tips are the standard here on the Mo. Do you have the appropriate tips to gain the proper depth? Well, we certainly have the tools to help you into the trout. Come on by. Open daily.
Some dry fly fishing around. Moving midges. Hard to catch as the trout generally do not find themselves in a feeding pattern like you may witness during the summer hatch periods. A floating midge you can see coupled with a black soft hackle or Zebra midge will suffice. Do we have the right flies? You bet. Bins full of the killer winter flies you need! Midge clusters galore in store. Fish are in soft pools roaming.
Headhunters Fly Shop and Guide Service along with Craig Trout Camp open all year long. Love to see you in Craig this weekend!
