Missouri River Montana Weekend Foreshadowing

Missouri River Montana Weekend Foreshadowing

Flow increasing today to 6500cfs.

Weather cooperating this tail end of the week with wind free days yesterday and today.

Water flows increasing, temperature decreasing, rain developing on Monday and Tuesday.

PMD’s waxing. Caddis waxing. BWO’s waning. Midge holding steady. Drake in a couple weeks downstream. Trico’s in 2 weeks or more.

Nymphers finding some difficulty during portions of the day. Even the pros are dealing with off bite periods. Normal for fishing? Yes. Normal for the pros out there? Not really. Deep and shallow. Typical start of the day is deep bobber rig. Moving toward the surface as the day progresses.

Baby Chubby with a dropper?

Crips and spinners and emergers for the PMD crowd. A banner PMD spinner fall this mid morning running through the afternoon. Real good. Fish somewhat finicky, but 40 perfect drifts over a trout rising is enough to make them generally take a sniff. PMD Conundrum? Yes, periods of this frustrating moment in the PMD daily hatch progression. More eon this phenomena in the weeks to come.

Dry fly casters. A hint here today. Cast at them. Picking an imaginary spot above the trout does not equal lots of success. Casting at their heads makes more sense. Yes, honest truths here on this blog.

Another hint today that long time Montana Guide Brian Kimmel told me recently. Rush Slowly. I agree with this concept.

This month is filled with anglers. Be courteous and kind out there. Enjoy the early summer.

  • I made only 39 casts to each fish. you know the results.

  • Thanks for the moment of fame putting a picture of me in this post. I remember that day with great fondness. When we floated up to that spot several fish were rising, and I think I did get a fish there. I have fished that spot several times since and haven’t seen fish there since. Funny how a spot will be good then suddenly you stop having any luck there.
