Silly September Saturday Scenery
Fall is here. Autumn may be gone with the snow from this winter event we are currently enduring,
Snowing hard in Cascade with at least 2″ on the ground already this morning. Projected to be 15″+ in the next 48 hours.
Yuck.
But blowing hard from the North too.
Snowing sideways as we write this Saturday Blog.
The feller above is out there Headhunting. Yes indeed, you can find a couple out there and get them to eat. A bundle of anglers have been getting them on the dry fly.
Currently tiny BWO’s coming off in the later afternoon. They can be tough to crack. A small Quigley style cripple can get it done. Sometimes.
October Caddis out there too. More than average for us here on the MO. And beyond. Fished the Blackfoot last week and had good success with the classic Kaufmann’s Stimulator. Orange of course. Good reports from the Mo too as some have had a good bite on the big October bug. Skitter it if you can. If you can’t? Don’t.
That smaller size 16 tan caddis has made many days this past month. Lots of big brown trout to hand blind fishing it in riffles, along banks with our better than historical summer, autumn, and fall flows. Flows over 5Kcfs will give you lots of options for center river flats, deeper riffles, and our not oft fished bank lanes.
The bigger BWO’s will come in October. This weather event should cool the water temps even more and bring us an October we have been waiting for. IT has been some time since we have witnessed, fished, ad great Missouri River October. Will 2019 be the one?
Flows 5K+. Water temps falling daily currently at 58F. BWO’s gotta be coming down the pike?!
Is the fishing best ever? Nope. Decent for sure. It is the old adage “The fishing is as good as you are.” Is it as good as September can be? Nymphing no. Dry fly yes. Streamer fishing sort of. Swinging? Getting some, losing some. The fish are pretty bitey on the swing.
The Headhunters gang is at full attention. Lots going on the month ahead. The Trout Spey Camp mid month. Many Montana rivers waning, and the guides will be here streamer fishing and headhunting. We love chumming around with the guide industry folks. They like to fish, and drink. The International Fly Tackle Dealer industry show after the camp. RIO/Sage annual trip beyond that Denver event. More swinging. Lots of BWO’s. Lots of fly fishing fellowship.
October ahead. A great month on the Mo.
Enjoy your Saturday. We are inside tying flies, napping, catching up from the frenetic summer pace, and getting super stoked for what lies ahead.
