Why Get Guided?
We hear this question a lot in the shop. Mark has written about the subject here and here. If you’ve wondered the same question, I’d recommend that you read these links.
The following is a short and timely example of why a person might want to consider a guided trip:
A couple weeks ago Mark Laplaunt came into Headhunters for some fly recommendations. He had fished quite a bit, but was new to fly fishing. He was contemplating taking a guided trip in order to learn about the river. He decided to take advantage of our knowledgeable full time guide staff and fished with Max Mattioli this past Wednesday.
The Result
When Mark came back at the end of the day, it was great to hear how great of a day he had had. He caught a lot of trout and more importantly, he had the chance to ask a lot of questions to a guide who spent over 100 days on the Missouri River last year. He also managed to land the carp in the picture above! We had already recommended flies to him and told him what kind of water to look for, but there’s no better way to learn the river than to go with somebody who has intimate knowledge of it.
At the end of the day, Mark was excited to bring his own boat to the river and use some of the knowledge he had received from Max on his own. I’m sure he’ll catch some the next time he goes out.
One of the best parts of working in a fly shop is sharing the excitement of learning to fly fish with individuals who are new to the sport. I’m glad to have had the opportunity to meet Mark and to see him have such a good time on his guide trip.
