Montana Missouri River Fishing Report 4.27.25

Water levels for the summer are projected to be about normal. The snow that is on the ground Mid-Mo0nth April is a forecast on the future of the summer water levels. Therefore, the totals above predict that we will have an average water year ahead.

Unless it snows a bundle. Or rains a lot. And that happens. Mother Nature generally does not let us know, until it happens. And then we know.

Now to the fishing Report!

Nymphers are all about the Sow, the Egg Sucking Sow(s), the BWO in the afternoon, the March Brown creeping into our minds on the lower, midge pupa, and so very soon the PMD nymphs. Actual fly patterns include Caviar Scud, S & M BWO, Epoxy Back Rainbow Sowbug, Black Mirage Zebra, Pill Popper, Micro May, Little Green Machine, Olive Perdition, March Brown Perdigon, Montana Bullet Black and Red, Mid-weight Scud Rainbow Jig, Two Bit Hooker and more.

Dry fly anglers looking hard during the days after lunch. Best bite has been later in the evening after many of the boats are off the water. If you are interested in the dry bite on a sunny day, you should start later, finish later. If the sun is not obscured by the clouds the fish will not move toward the surface. The reason? No eyelids. No sunglasses. Cripples, emergers, and duns are the right moves. Adams with dropper? Yessir.

Streamer anglers do not like the sun either. Nor do the trout. Trout do not like the bright lights int he winter and spring months, much. They seem to get over it in the summer months as the rise to the PMD, Caddis, and Trico is strong. No update not he killer streamer or even the preferred streamer family. Hit and miss is the latest intel.

Swing bite? Decent. But same as the streamer gang wanting overcast conditions. Soft hackles and wet flies are the preferred methodology currently as we look towards the Scandinavian line appearing soon!

Headhunters open daily 8am til 7pm. May 1st we move to 7am-7pm. Shuttles daily. Early and late. Best Flies Under the Big Sky available daily. Dry flies at $2.50. Stock up for summer. Sale items in store. New Skwala Wading Boots have arrived. Hats and T’s galore. Stickers too.

See you soon on the water.
