TRIP PLANNER

Craig Montana

The village of Craig is the center of fly fishing on the Missouri River (and North Central Montana for that matter). Craig consists of 3 fly shops, 2 places to eat, 3 places to drink, a mechanic, a weed shop and a lawyer. That’s it, no joke. Infrastructure is slim here, but we did implement a local “resort tax” several years ago to get a sewer system in place. Our biggest problem is finding employees and finding housing for them. All of the businesses in the “Canyon” struggle to find and keep help. Occasionally this requires a little patience and understanding on the part of our guests.

Driving to Craig

From the North, you’ll be coming down Interstate 15. Craig is at exit #234 about 45 minutes south of Great Falls, MT. Between Great Falls and Craig you’ll pass the small town of Cascade, which is your last chance for gas and groceries.

From the West, you’ll be driving on Hwy 200, coming with from Missoula and I-15, or northwest from the Flathead region on Hwy 83. Either way after traveling through Lincoln (a good stop for snacks and gas), you’ll drive over Rogers Pass and descend into eastern Montana. You can either take your first right on Hwy 434, or take your second right on Hwy 287. Either way, you’ll end up at I-15 just south of Craig. Get on the Interstate and head north a few miles to exit 234 at Craig.

From the South, you’ll be coming up Interstate 15. In Montana, you’ll drive through Dillon, Butte and Helena. Craig is at exit 234 about 45 miles north of Helena. Helena is a great last stop to get gas and groceries along with anything else you might need (take the Custer Ave exit east).

From the East, if you’re coming on Interstate 90 or 94, you’ll drive through Bozeman and exit onto Hwy 287 at Three Forks (about 30 miles west of Bozeman) and take Hwy 287 to it’s junction with Interstate 90 at Helena. Proceed north to Craig on I-15. If you’re coming on Hwy 2 or Hwy 87 or any other highways or combinations of highways north of I-90/94, you’ll likely end up at Interstate 15 in either Shelby or Great Falls. When you get there, enter I-15 south and follow it to Craig at exit 234. Craig is 45 minutes south of Great Falls.

Flying to Craig

The closest airports are in Great Falls and Helena, each about 45 minutes of easy freeway driving from Craig (Great Falls would be considered the “Local” airport for Missouri River anglers). Both airports are served by Delta, United and Alaska airlines and have regularly scheduled flights. You can arrange for rental cars as well, and there are transport services that can be hired if you’d like. If fishing in Craig is part of larger travel to Montana, you may also find yourself flying into Missoula, Kalispell or Bozeman, all of which are about a 3 hour drive from Craig, depending on traffic, weather and roadwork.

Transportation

Rental Cars

Rental cars are not always easy to find at the last minute in Montana, so you should always make a reservation well in advance. If you are staying in the town of Craig, you can get away without a rental car as everything is within easy walking distance… fly shops, restaurants, bars, and your guide will pick you up here. But if you think you might want to do a little wade fishing in the evening, or need to make a run to the grocery store, you will need a car.

Tow Capable Rental Vehicles If you think you will be towing a rental boat, make sure and ask if your vehicle (most likely a Tahoe or similar) has a receiver for a hitch. Sometimes you can figure this out on arrival at the rental car agency. You don’t need to have the tongue and 2” ball as you can buy one at ACE or Home Depot, and shops like Headhunters have a few for you to use. But you do need the receiver. You can also rent a pickup from Uhaul or Budget which generally have a receiver and hitch.

Truck Rentals for towing

EXPLORE Rentals in Bozeman is an interesting option, especially for those planning to “trout bum” around the state for a few weeks. You can rent Subaru Outbacks, Mercedes Sprinters, even a Porche Cayenne! They also rent rafts, camping gear, spotting scopes and even bear spray. If you want to be self sufficient and mobile this is a great way to do it. This is a great place to get a car with a hitch for rental boats as well. You will need to fly into Bozeman.

Taxi and Shuttle Services

If you opt not to get a rental car, you will need to make arrangements for transportation to Craig from one of the transportation services listed below. Headhunters does not shuttle guests back and forth to Helena or Great Falls (we would if we had the staff), so please don’t ask.

Staying in Craig and the Missouri River Canyon

You won’t find any big hotel chains here. Just mom & pop lodging, private homes and cabins. There are a couple of smaller full service lodges as well a handful of eateries and drinkeries scattered down “the Canyon” between Wolf Creek and Cascade. All of our firefighters are volunteers, and a Sheriff’s deputy swings through once every few weeks.

Lodging

We operate the largest lodging service on the river, and by “we” we mean Julie Arnold. Craig often runs out of lodging before it runs out of guides, so it pays to make your reservations at least 6 months in advance if possible. But, if you are on short notice Julie will do everything in her power to get you hooked up with some lodging. Check out our lodging selection.

Eating & Drinking

In Craig, Izaaks Restaurant is the most popular restaurant in the area, and has become a legendary meeting spot among traveling anglers. The full bar and restaurant is a lively post fishing hang out. Walk a block south and you’ll find the Craig Taphouse, with local and regional brews along with delicious burgers and pizza. The tap house has both indoor and outdoor seating as well. A reach cast to the north you’ll fall into the Craig Bar, aka “Joe’s”. Famous as a place to drink cans of beer and mingle with fishing and non-fishing locals, you’ll find a great Jukebox, pool table and the crew might even throw a frozen pizza in the toaster oven of you get off the water really late.

Upstream from Craig, you’ll find Wolf Creek and the Lazy I Beerworks, serving Montana craft beers and classic bar food including baskets, salads, burgers and fish taco’s. Under the freeway overpass you’ll find the Oasis Bar & Grill, a longtime local establishment known more for the “bar” than the “grill”. Next to that you’ll find The Wolf Hoagies and Ice Cream if you’re looking for a quick takeaway sandwich or milkshake.

Downstream at the community of Prewett Creek the uniquely named Missouri River Bar & Grill serves cocktails, burger, fries typical of a stream side joint in Big Sky Country. The location is key, across the street from the Prewett Creek boat ramp a popular end point for a Canyon float.

Groceries

If you plan on doing any of your own cooking, we strongly encourage you to stop in Great Falls or Helena and load up there. In Great Falls it’s easiest to stop at the Marketplace where you’ll find Smith’s Market, and at the airport exit where you’ll find Town Pumps for fuel and vices. You can also make a quick stop in Ulm for fuel, snacks and beer/wine/liquor, but definitely get your groceries in Great Falls first. In Helena, the easiest stop is at the Custer Avenue exit #194 where you’ll find SuperOne, WinCo, Costco and a Exxon/Town Pump for fuel and vices. You can get everything you need at the 468 Market in Cascade, a quick 20 minute drive from Craig. It’s a small store, but has a full beer selection, deli, fresh veggies, a butcher, and pretty much all of the basics.

Gas & Mini-mart

Gas is available in Wolf Creek (5 miles), Cascade (20 miles), Ulm (30 miles), Helena and Great Falls. If there’s gas, there’s a mini-mart attached. And in Cascade it’s a small, full service Grocery Store - the 468 Market. Definitely fill up before you make that final push to Craig. Everything is so close here, you probably won’t need to fill up during your stay if you arrived with close to a full tank.

Beer, Wine and Liquor

You may also want to stop and get alcoholic beverages before you arrive, and that’s an easier thing to find in Craig than groceries. In Montana, you can purchase alcohol to go at any bar, including Joe’s Craig Bar and Izaak’s Restaurant in Craig. You’ll likely pay a bit more for a bottle of Jameson at the bar than at the liquor store in Great Falls, and if the bartender is running low he may deny you. So if that’s really important, it’ll be worth the few minute stop in Helena or Great Falls on your way to Craig. There are liquor stores at most Town Pump’s in Montana, and those are easy to find everywhere. There is also a liquor store in Ulm, which is between Great Falls and Cascade.

Cell Phone Service

Cell phone service is not great in Craiglandia. In fact by 21st century standards it’s horrible. Basically, service exists from Wolf Creek almost to Craig, then again as you approach Cascade below Pelican Point. WiFi is more common in Craig and the Canyon, so if you have WiFi calling enabled on your phone (not everyone does) you can use that service to make and receive calls and use data (that’s how our staff does it). Headhunters - and a few other spots - have a cell signal booster that works fine of you stay close. The lack of a fiberoptic network between Wolf Creek and Cascade also limits the type of TV you’ll find in rental units. Bottom line… if you have really important business calls, or absolutely must watch a big sporting event on TV, we suggest you go somewhere else. If you just want to experience great fishing, scenery, people and enjoy a few cocktails, come here.

Dog Boarding

If you want or need to board your dog while on a fishing trip to the Missouri River, or need Veterinarian services, then you can contact Dr. Miedtke at Switchback Vet Clinic in Cascade at 406-750-9588 or switchbackvet@gmail.com.

RV Sites and Camping

If you plan on camping along the Missouri River you have a couple of options. Firstly, Craig has no public land outside of boat ramps, so if you envisioning pulling your rig through the woods to an undeveloped riverside campsite, get that idea out of your head. You will be camping in Public developed campgrounds, or private RV parks.

The public campgrounds are at Montana FWP Fishing Access Sites (FAS) and are on the river as these sites are there to provide river access and boat ramps. Some, but not all, campsites are riverside. The BLM also operates public campgrounds immediately below Holter Dam and up on Holter Lake. The following FAS have campsites.

General Rules for Montana FAS Campsites:

  • First come, first serve… no reservations.

  • No garbage facilities. Pack it in, pack it out.

  • Vault toilets (outhouse)

  • No hookups for RV.

  • Water hydrant at some, but not all.

  • 7 day maximum

FAS Campgrounds between Holter Dam and Cascade:

  • Holter Dam - BLM

  • Wolf Creek - FAS

  • Craig - FAS

  • Stickney Creek - FAS

  • Spite Hill - FAS

  • Dearborn - FAS

  • Mid Canon - FAS

  • Mountain Palace - FAS

  • Prewett Creek - FAS

  • Pelican Point - FAS
